Pathaan is a 2023 Indian Hindi-language action thriller directed by Siddharth Anand and produced by Aditya Chopra under Yash Raj Films. It's the fourth installment in the YRF Spy Universe, starring Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role, alongside Deepika Padukone, John Abraham, Dimple Kapadia, and Ashutosh Rana. The movie follows an exiled RAW agent who teams up with an ISI agent, Rubina Mohsin, to stop Jim, a former RAW agent, from launching a deadly virus attack on India.
Principal photography for the film began in November 2020 in Mumbai, and it was shot across various locations, including Afghanistan, Spain, UAE, Turkey, Russia, Italy, and France. The music for the film was composed by Vishal-Shekhar, with Sanchit Balhara and Ankit Balhara providing the background score. The film had an estimated budget of ₹250 crore (US$30 million).
Pathaan was released theatrically in India on 25 January 2023, coinciding with the Republic Day weekend. The film was well-received by critics and audiences alike, setting several box office records for a Hindi film, including the highest opening day, highest single day, highest opening weekend, and highest opening week collections. It became the highest-grossing Hindi film of all time in India at that point and performed exceptionally well in overseas markets as well. Pathaan grossed ₹1,050.30 crore (US$130 million) worldwide, making it the second highest-grossing Indian film of 2023 and the third-highest-grossing Hindi film of all time.
At the 69th Filmfare Awards, Pathaan received 16 nominations, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actress (Padukone). It won the award for Best Female Playback Singer for Shilpa Rao's rendition of the song "Besharam Rang."

Production and Filming
The film was officially announced on 2 March 2022, with Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, and John Abraham in the lead roles. Principal photography began in November 2020 in Mumbai, with subsequent shoots in Dubai, Russia, Turkey, Spain, and France. Some major action sequences were filmed in Dubai, including a long chase scene.
Music
The film's soundtrack, composed by Vishal-Shekhar, includes popular tracks like "Besharam Rang" and "Jhoome Jo Pathaan." The album was released in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.
Marketing and Release
Pathaan was marketed with a series of teasers and trailers, including a teaser released on Shah Rukh Khan's 57th birthday. The film was released in various formats, including IMAX and 4DX, and was the first Indian film to be released in the ICE theatre format.
Distribution and Home Media
Pathaan was released in 8,000 screens worldwide, with 5,000 screens in India. It was the first Hindi film to be released theatrically in Bangladesh in over 50 years. The digital rights were sold to Amazon Prime Video for ₹100 crore (US$12 million), with an extended version available from 22 March 2023. The satellite rights were acquired by Star Gold, and the film premiered on television on 18 June 2023.
