Merry Christmas is a 2024 Indian mystery thriller film directed by Sriram Raghavan, featuring Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi in the lead roles. The film was produced by Ramesh Taurani, Jaya Taurani, Sanjay Routray, and Kewal Garg under the banners of Tips Films and Matchbox Pictures. It is adapted from the French novel Le Monte-charge (Bird in a Cage) by Frédéric Dard.

Production and Development

The film was officially announced in December 2021. The project marked a shift in Sriram Raghavan's focus after he decided to put another film, Ekkis, on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially, Saif Ali Khan was approached for the lead role, but Vijay Sethupathi was eventually cast to bring a fresh dynamic to the film. Katrina Kaif was the first choice for the female lead.

Filming

Principal photography began in December 2021 in Mumbai, with additional shoots in Uttar Pradesh. However, filming was frequently interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was only completed by mid-January 2023. Cinematography was handled by Madhu Neelakandan, and the editing was done by Pooja Ladha Surti.

Music

The film's music was composed by Pritam, adding to the atmospheric tension of the thriller.

Release Date

Merry Christmas faced multiple delays before finally being released in theaters on 12 January 2024. The film received positive reviews, especially for the performances of Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi. However, despite critical acclaim, the movie struggled at the box office and was considered a commercial failure.

Home Media OTT

The digital streaming rights were acquired by Netflix for ₹60 crore (approximately US$7.2 million). The film premiered on the platform on 8 March 2024.
