Plot
The movie is a fictionalized retelling of a series of military events between India and Pakistan in 2019, including the Pulwama attack, the Balakot airstrike, and border skirmishes. Hrithik Roshan plays Squadron Leader Shamsher "Patty" Pathania, while Deepika Padukone portrays Squadron Leader Minal "Minni" Rathore. Anil Kapoor plays Group Captain Rakesh "Rocky" Jaisingh, the commanding officer of the Air Dragons unit.

Production
Development:
The idea for Fighter came to Siddharth Anand during the filming of War (2019). Hrithik Roshan was impressed with the concept, and the project was officially announced on 10 January 2021, on Roshan's birthday. The film is India's first aerial action film and is planned as a franchise. The movie was made with a budget of ₹250 crore.
Filming:
The film's production faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Filming finally began in November 2022 in various locations, including Assam, Hyderabad, Jammu and Kashmir, and Mumbai. Real-life Indian Air Force personnel were involved in the making of the film, which wrapped up in October 2023.
Training:
Hrithik Roshan underwent extensive training, including 12 weeks of simulator training to prepare for his role as a fighter pilot. He also visited various Indian Air Force establishments to observe the functioning of the officers and cadets.
Music
The soundtrack album, composed by Vishal–Shekhar, includes five songs. The film’s score was composed by Sanchit and Ankit Balhara, while the cinematography was handled by Satchith Paulose.

Fighter was initially scheduled for a 30 September 2022 release but was delayed to 25 January 2024, coinciding with Republic Day. The film was banned across Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries due to its portrayal of Islamic countries.

Reception
Critical Response:
The film received mixed reviews. Some praised the action sequences and performances, particularly those of Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone, while others criticized the cliched storyline and excessive jingoism. India Today rated it 4/5 stars for its action and performances, whereas NDTV gave it 2.5/5 stars, noting the technical achievements but critiquing the story.
Box Office:
Fighter grossed ₹237 crore in India and ₹337.2 crore worldwide, making it the fourth highest-grossing Indian film of 2024 and the second highest-grossing Hindi film of the year. It topped the global box office on its opening weekend.
Future
The success of Fighter has led to the planning of a sequel. Production for Fighter 2 is expected to begin after Siddharth Anand completes shooting Tiger vs Pathaan.
