Aavesham is a 2024 Indian Malayalam-language gangster action-comedy film directed and written by Jithu Madhavan. Produced by Nazriya Nazim and Anwar Rasheed under the banners of Fahadh Faasil and Friends and Anwar Rasheed Entertainments, the movie stars Fahadh Faasil in the lead role of Ranjith "Ranga" Gangadharan. The cast includes Hipzster, Mithun Jai Shankar, Roshan Shanavas, Sajin Gopu, Midhutty, and Mansoor Ali Khan. The story revolves around three young men in Bangalore who team up with a local gangster to get revenge on their school bully.

Production and Development

The film was officially announced in March 2023 under the working title Production No.1, as it marked the first project under Fahadh Faasil and Friends. The official title, Aavesham, was revealed in May 2023. Jithu Madhavan, who gained recognition for his previous work Romancham, wrote the script between December 2022 and February 2023. Despite rumors, Madhavan clarified that Aavesham is a standalone film with no connection to Romancham. The technical team includes Sushin Shyam as the music composer, Sameer Thahir as the cinematographer, Vivek Harshan as the editor, and Ashwini Kale as the production designer.

Casting

Fahadh Faasil plays Ranga, a gangster based in Bangalore, a role that required him to adopt a thick handlebar mustache and an all-white outfit. Fahadh mentioned that this character is quite different from his previous roles, as it involves a mix of Malayalam and Kannada dialogues, reflecting the manner of speech typical of Bangalore's gangsters. Sajin Gopu, who also appeared in Romancham, plays a significant role in the film, along with newcomers like Hipzster, Mithun Jai Shankar, and Roshan Shanavas.

Filming

Principal photography began in May 2023 in Bangalore, with the film being shot predominantly in and around the city. Filming wrapped up in November 2023. The film’s costume design, managed by Mashar Hamsa, featured Fahadh in all-white attire with gold chains, shifting to an all-black look during the climactic scenes.

Release and Reception

Aavesham was released theatrically on 11 April 2024, coinciding with the Eid al-Fitr and Vishu celebrations. The release faced delays from its originally planned dates for Onam (August 2023) and Christmas (December 2023). Distributed by A&A Release in India and Phars Film internationally, the movie was one of the most anticipated Malayalam films of 2024.

The film opened to critical acclaim, with particular praise for Jithu Madhavan's direction, Fahadh Faasil's performance, action sequences, cinematography, and music. Aavesham was a blockbuster, grossing over ₹154 crores worldwide against a budget of ₹30 crores. It became the fourth highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time and one of the top-grossing South Indian and Indian films of 2024.

Home Media and Marketing

The film's digital streaming rights were acquired by Amazon Prime Video, where it premiered on 9 May 2024. The Hindi version of the film was later released on Disney+ Hotstar on 20 June 2024.

Marketing efforts included a teaser trailer released on 25 January 2024, and a promotional event at Union Christian College, Aluva on 26 March 2024, featuring Fahadh Faasil and other key members of the cast and crew.
